Take a deep breath. In and out. Candy has no moral value. What you eat doesn’t make you good or bad, worthy or unworthy. It just is.
Just like how one day of eating veggies doesn’t change your whole life, neither does one day of eating candy.
But I too have been in the place where I am telling myself these things… and yet I still struggle. Maybe like I have, you are finding it difficult to have grace with your brain and your body at this time.
Maybe you feel sluggish or are feeling some of the physical effects of eating a lot of sugar.
Maybe you just feel overwhelmed at how much candy is sitting on your kitchen counter right now eyeing you down.
So let’s talk about some tactics so that you can continue to honor your body and take care of your physical and mental health today.
Number 1: Remember that restriction breeds desire. The more you tell yourself that you can’t have something or that it’s bad, the more you want it. (Think that boy in high school that you weren’t allowed to date… now that’s a spooky memory.)
So when you find yourself wanting a piece of candy, instead of avoiding it for 3 hours and trying to eat other “replacement” foods, go ahead and have some. Take the time to actually smell it, taste it, and enjoy it… and then move on.
Go on to your next activity and remember that it’s okay to eat candy.
Number 2: Pair your carb snacks or candy with some protein. Especially if you are feeling hungry and know that you need a more substantial snack. This will help to actually keep you full and keep your blood sugar more balanced and regulated throughout the day. This leads to better energy and less of the sluggish feeling or brain fog this afternoon.
In addition, make sure that you have balanced meals today (and everyday) that include protein, fat, carbs and fiber. This will set you up for overall hormone health and fertility success and lessen the amount of cravings that you feel.
Number 3: Drink plenty of water. Your body needs it! Staying hydrated does wonderful things for your energy, metabolism, digestion, and mental clarity and when we are trying to ward off negative self-talk, we need mental clarity.
Number 4: Make time for some movement. And no, not in the “you need to burn off calories from halloween candy” kind of way. Movement and exercise will help support your digestion, your blood sugar and hormone regulation, and help your brain think better.
Remember what Legally Blonde taught us… “endorphins make you happy.”
Take time to do whatever feels good. It doesn’t have to leave you huffing and puffing to give you all of these benefits! It could be as simple as taking 10 minutes to dance around your house or go for a walk while listening to music!
Number 5: Take time for gratitude. When life starts to feel overwhelming and chaotic, sometimes we start to spin and spiral with negative thoughts. Something that can be helpful is to take time to ground ourselves in gratitude. Even if it is as small or as big as getting out of bed today.
You deserve to feel happy, thankful, and proud of your day and yourself. Things that may seem small are actually really big wins and they should be celebrated.
Most importantly, I hope that you enjoyed your holiday. You don’t need to worry about what you ate and you don’t need to be upset with yourself.
We just keep moving forward in a way that feels good and without restriction because you deserve food and you deserve to fuel yourself in a way that feels good for your mind, body, and soul.
