How many times have you heard to just “lose weight” and your hormones will figure themselves out?
Or…
Gotta love this one… “just eat less and move more.”
To suggest that weight is the most important or only solution for any hormone concern is not okay. Especially when this advice is often given with no regard to education or behavioral changes.
When your sex hormones are all over the place and you’re experiencing low energy, fatigue, pain, and mood swings that would make a roller coaster jealous, losing weight can be difficult and eating less and moving more doesn’t always work.
And above all else, losing weight isn’t the answer for a lot of women with hormone imbalance and when done in an unhealthy way, can actually exacerbate the problem at hand.
This is why it is so important to focus on healthy behaviors that you can have a direct effect on.
✔️ Eating More fruits and veggies: Add berries to your breakfast, eat vegetables at 2 meals a day, and choose fruits with a protein source for a snack.
✔️ Strength training: Strength training (not to be confused with high intensity interval training) is great for hormone health and it can help your body use carbohydrates more appropriately
✔️ Balancing your blood sugar: Combine your carbohydrate foods with a protein or a healthy fat for sustained, long lasting energy, more fullness, and better blood sugar balance.
✔️ Getting 10-20 minutes of morning and/or evening sunlight: This helps regulate your circadian rhythm, your sleep/wake cycle, which also plays a role in hormone regulation and this small change in your daily habits can have BIG effects.
These are all actions that YOU can take TODAY, that don’t include you stepping on the scale just to feel frustrated and overwhelmed with no changes in your symptoms, so that you can help your hormone balance and finally have period that doesn’t leave you knocked out for a week every month.
