A Few Extra Pounds? Pregnancy Weight Gain is so Much More

You’re looking in the mirror wondering how on earth you are going to do this for another 8 weeks. 

You stepped onto the scale at the doctor’s office yesterday and it was the highest you’ve  ever been…and it’s only going to go up. The swelling alone is enough to drive anyone crazy. How did it come on so fast?

I know you’re so thankful for this experience, thankful for your baby and most days you even like your cute little bump. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t times that are hard. The number on the scale feels like too much right now. You’re starting to feel overwhelmed and frustrated. You’re already planning out your exercise and diet after baby is born. 

If this is you…If you are scared this will be you… If the weight isn’t coming off as fast as you thought it would… A few reminders:

Weight gain during pregnancy is an important part of your pregnancy. Your body takes what nutrition it needs and then passes it along to baby. If you are deficient in specific nutrients, you’re likely not passing enough nutrition along. 

The weight gain that you experience in pregnancy is made up of:

  • Baby growing
  • Fat stores
  • Uterus and breast growth
  • Amniotic fluid
  • Placenta
  • Increased blood and fluid volume

All of these things are necessary for the transmission of nutrition, immune health, and protection and growth of baby. These are essential and normal for a healthy mom and baby through pregnancy. When we live in a society that has convinced women that any sort of weight gain is a reflection on their moral character, I want to remind you that you are more than a body and your body is doing extraordinary things right now. 

You may not feel your best right now and this is not to disregard what you are going through. The discomfort is real. The pain is real. You deserve to feel validated in that. 

You also deserve to eat and know that your weight gain is so much more than just “a couple extra pounds.”
