It’s Monday afternoon and you’re struggling. Why is it so hard to get back in a rhythm after every weekend?
The clock slowly ticks by, it’s 3pm and you’re exhausted. You have so many projects that need to get done, but all you want to do is take a nap.
You text your work girlfriends…time for a coffee?? You go for an iced caramel latte. The sugar and caffeine should be enough to put a little pep in your step!
But then it’s 4:30 and you feel even worse. Your head has a weird buzz, you feel agitated and restless. You tell yourself you need to cut back on the sugar. It’s almost like you’re addicted to sugar and caffeine. After all, you are constantly craving carbs, whether it’s cookies, donuts, or yes… a sugary coffee.
Maybe you’re not addicted to sugar or caffeine. Maybe your body just needs more energy. I’m not talking about energy drinks here. I am talking about real energy. The kind that comes from food. That afternoon slump isn’t because you need more coffee. It’s most likely because you need better, longer lasting nutrition to carry you through the afternoon.
Maybe coffee wasn’t what you needed. Maybe what your body needed was:
✔️ Enough water to keep you hydrated and keep your brain working.
✔️ A few deep breaths to help you relax and keep you calm.
✔️ Most importantly, a snack that includes a carb with fiber and a protein.
When you need energy, carbs are your friend. When you combine them with a lean protein, it helps to slow down how fast your body uses that energy (energy in the form of carbohydrates). This will help to keep you full, keep your energy long lasting, and keep your hormones happy. Getting rid of the need for that afternoon sweet coffee!
Sometimes it really is that simple. Save your money on the coffee this week and try this instead…
Drink a glass of ice water, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, and have a snack that has a carb and a protein such as whole grain crackers and a cheese stick or fruit and a hard boiled egg.
